Follow the life of a New York Homicide detective that has an amazing secret, he is immortal. From the director of “My Life As a Dog,” “The Cider House Rules,” “Chocolat,” and “The Hoax” Lasse Hallstrom and written by Allan Loeb (“Things We Lost in the Fire” and “21”) comes this story about finding true love.

In 1642, a Dutch solider in old New York, which back then was the colony of New Amsterdam saved the life of a Native American girl during a battle by getting in between a sword blow. The girl returned the favor by casting an ancient spell of immortality upon him. The solider, John Amsterdam (Nikolaj Coster Waldau) will not age until he finds true love and becomes whole again. Over the next three centuries Amsterdam lives an adventurous life but everyone he meets, from lovers to children must pass away while he stays young. Eternal life eventually leads to loneliness and isolation and the immortal life goes from a blessing to a curse.

As the centuries pass, Amsterdam finds himself still intimately knowing New York City, from colony to bustling metropolis. He is now one of NYPD’s best homicide detectives and has a strong willed partner Eva Marquez (Zuleikha Robinson). Amsterdam later suffers from a massive heart attack while chasing a suspect, so massive that the doctors pronounced him dead in the ER. He recovers remarkably and realizes that the prophesy from the spell might be coming true and believes his true love is close by.

Coming this fall to Fox, New Amsterdam looks to be a compelling series about the pursuit of true love beyond the boundaries of time. Check local listings.

On the 10th of June 2005 Universal Studios and Fox announced that they would distribute and film the popular videogame-based movie titled Halo. Later that year on December 25th the movie was categorized as being in a state of Pre-production. Seems simple enough? Not really.

In 2006 there was a rumor that Alex Garland’s original script would be replaced by a D.B. Weiss story draft.  An interesting fact is that Garland was originally paid $1 million by Microsoft to write an adaption of Halo and then Microsoft sold the script to Universal Studios for $10 million; it seems to me like someone was ripped off big-time. With both Fox and Universal backing out of the project in late 2006, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Microsoft decides to postpone the project and all development is halted.

Latest news is that Fox has now purchased the filming rights and a statement has been issued saying that production will go on. Despite upcoming Halo 3 there is a risk of this movie being shelved for life considering its entangled production-history. What a mess.

David Eick, among other things, the producer of the re-imagined and lauded Battlestar Galactica, is doing some re-imagination of his own with the new Bionic Woman, premiering on NBC this fall. Bionic Woman is about, well, a bionic woman, but don’t shy away from the series based on the cheesiness of that one-sentence-premise. After all, how silly and clichéd doesn’t Galactica’s most basic premise sound? Man creates Cylon, Cylon kills man. And Galactica has, as we know, incredible depth and great dramatic gravitas.

Bionic Woman then, is about Jaime Sommers (Michelle Ryan), a woman and a bartender, working hard to make ends meet, who following a would-be fatal “accident” is made bionic. Now both she and her surroundings need to come to terms with what she has become - and no-one is particularly happy about it.

According to Eick, similarly to the new Galactica, the new Bionic Woman will be a radical re-conceptualization of the original series. This is of course as it should be. After all, it’s a re-imagination, not a remake, and it will be very interesting to see how Eick and his crew handle it.
